Salmon information
|
The Canterbury region is the premiere location for chinook/king salmon, with four of the best producing rivers within a 90 minute drive of Christchurch city.
The chinook/king salmon established in New Zealand migrate into Canterbury rivers between the months of November through to April, with the peak run being from December through to March. Fish size fluctuates from season to season ranging from 5-20lbs, with the average being around 12lb. The preferred method for catching chinook/king salmon is spinning with heavy tackle, though it is possible to target them fly fishing too. The best times to target these fish are during their most active periods – early morning or late evening. The salmon rivers in Canterbury are subject to changeable weather conditions and there are times when they are un-fishable. These conditions may require a change in fishing location and/or methods. A comfortable 4WD is used to access the best fishing water. A jet boat or helicopter is available at additional cost. If you’d like to book you can contact Neil directly here. |
